Gerlachsheim - My first experience:

“I had no idea what to expect when I first went to Gerlachsheim.  My ability to speak in German wasn't good and I was slightly apprehensive.  It was the first trip I ever made by myself and so this was quite an adventure to go all the way to Europe and visit a country that speaks a language I'm not good at speaking.  My first impressions and thoughts were about how pretty, quaint, clean and orderly Gerlachsheim looked.  I love the flower gardens in front of all the houses and the tender care the residents give to their gardens.  It amazed me to see people going outside after it rained to clean up any leaves or flower petals that fell and sweep up any dirt that might have made it's way to the sidewalks or streets.  You wouldn't see this in America!  There is a pride and sense of responsibility to their own homes and their village I could never have imagined.  I was determined to practice my German and so I would try to say at least a few words to someone new each day.  Everyone I encountered in Gerlachsheim was tolerant of my fumblings and mistakes and courteous to me in return.  These were my first impressions. Some impressions took a little bit longer to sink in.  After a few days I began to realize how peaceful and serene it feels there.  It's quiet, not in an oppresive way but in a way that induces a feeling of calm and well-being. After a little longer I began to realize how relaxed I felt being there. The people in Gerlachsheim know each other.  It's almost like one big neighborhood except that in Gerlachsheim people know their neighbors!  It reminded me of the way things were here when I was a child.  Eventually I began to realize that I just felt safe.  I don't know an other way to explain it.

The Kriks are a generous and hospitable family. They know how to be there if you need something and still allow you as much room as you want to breathe. The house has all the modern conveniences you could want and the views from the windows and balconies are spectacular. You have a beautiful view of the Herrenberg and the vineyard that graces it. Speaking of the vineyard; don't pass up the chance for a wine tasting at ”Weingut Günther”. That reminds me that you also need to be sure to visit the Bakery for some fresh pretzels.  Be sure to take a tour of the gorgeous baroque church and it's grounds also. I can only tell you from my own experience that I can't imagine allowing a year to pass without making at least one journey back to visit Gerlachsheim and the Kriks family.  I hope each of you will make your own journey and write your own favorite memories about the experience.  I look forward to reading them.“
